About Lapis Playground

Here at Lapis, we want to be not just a home for your stories, but for your messy middle too.

As storytellers, we work so hard towards the final product that we forget to fall in love with the process. The one-off concepts, the stray statistics and figures, and everything else we find down the rabbit hole. That’s why we’re launching the Lapis Playground, a whiteboard built by the data storytellers at Kontinentalist, compiling all our experience into one sense-making platform. This feature allows users to make sense of their raw ideas and find the perfect framework for its many moving parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lapis?

Lapis is an all-in-one platform that allows users to blend text, data, and visuals into impactful stories. Think of it as a combination of Canva and Medium, or like Flourish but for long-form, more research-intensive work.

What is this festival for?

We are in an intensive and iterative research phase to further develop our product. This festival is not only a celebration of what we’ve been able to achieve, but an unveiling of the landmark feature we’ve been working on for the past few months: the Lapis Playground! And of course, we’d also love to stage more discussions as well as solicit feedback and suggestions around Lapis, so this festival would be a space to facilitate those conversations. Kontinentalist is a recipient of the Good Design Research Grant by Design Singapore.

What exactly is the Lapis Playground?

The Lapis Playground is our newest feature, dedicated to the messy middle of the story-storming process. As the name suggests, it’s a space to play around with the information gathered during the research stage and experiment before getting down to business. It takes inspiration from our creative process at Kontinentalist and brings in features specific to data storytelling such as connections, story structures, clusters, and more.

Why Lapis Playground?

Our extensive user research pointed us to a clear direction that sense-making, structuring narratives, and having a space to pool your resources is as important as having a platform to build and host the story. Hence, we looked internally at our own writer’s creative processes to come up with Lapis Playground to build a whiteboard tool specifically tailored for data storytellers.

Is the event free?

Yes, it is!

How about the platform itself?

Yes! Lapis is free and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. (If ever anything changes, you will be the first to know.)

Who is welcome to join the event?

Everyone who is interested to learn more about our product and our latest offerings! We’re expecting a mix of beginner to mid-level data practitioners across industries like media, nonprofit communications, research, and the academe.
